✨ Volunteer Spotlight - Coach Bob ✨
Our volunteer spotlight highlights the inspiring individuals who bring our mission to life and make a lasting difference in our organization!
Seasons Coached: Coaching my 4th season
What inspired you to start coaching? I initially volunteered at the 5K. I saw something truly special and worthwhile happening there and wanted to know more about it. The more I learned and spoke to GOTR people, I knew I had to get involved. The following season I decided to sign up to be a coach.
What keeps you coming back? I keep coming back because I see the positive impact we bring to the girls and the adults who care about them. Being a GOTR coach is one of the most rewarding and worthwhile experiences I have ever been involved with -- and it's fun!
How has coaching impacted you personally? I think I've become a better listener. I am seeing that just being present and letting someone express themselves, without instantly qualifying in my own mind what they are saying to me, is much more effective and informative in understanding their behavior or intent.
What advice would you give to a first-time coach Follow the lead of fellow coaches who have some experience but don't be afraid to jump in, be yourself and let the girls see who you are!
What is one unexpected thing you learned from being a GOTR coach? The importance of having feelings and expressing them - everyone should be entitled to have their feelings, any and all of sorts...qualifying them, rationalizing them or figuring out why you have a feeling is something else...feelings are feelings--all are valid. Sorting through them is important, but recognizing what you are feeling has to happen first!
We tip our hats to Coach Bob for the time, heart, and energy he gives to bring our mission to life and make Girls on the Run an incredible experience.
