Today we'd like to give a special shoutout to our GOTR coach Johanna!
Johanna is currently a Heart & Sole Coach at Hudson Falls Middle School. We asked her to answer a few questions about her experience with Girls on the Run.
How long have you been a coach with Girls on the Run? I have been involved with Girls on the Run for 11 seasons, some in Louisiana and now in New York.
What's your favorite thing about coaching a team of girls in this program? As an educator for the past ten years, I understand that all students crave positive role models. When I discovered GOTR, I knew I had to be a part of it. I love that it is child-centered and offers structured lessons focused on helping girls navigate school and grow into more independent adults. I also appreciate how inclusive the program is for all students. As a new educator at my school in New York, starting the GOTR program has allowed me to connect with more students and teachers.
Share your favorite GOTR memory. One of my favorite memories is witnessing one of my students in a wheelchair cross the finish line of the 5K with the biggest smile on her face. It was incredible to see and hear her grandfather say, 'She had never been invited to do something like this!'
What is one thing you'd like us to know about you? Outside of my career, I have four children ranging in age from 25 to 19, and I have been happily married for 25 years!
Coach Johanna, we are so thankful for you and all that you do for your teams at Girls on the Run. Way to GO-tr!
