What is Girls on the Run?

Girls on the Run is an international nonprofit that offers programs to strengthen third-to-eighth-grade girls’ social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills. The evidence-based curriculum helps participants build confidence, deepen relationships and successfully navigate life experiences. The 10-week program incorporates physical activity to unlock essential life skills, encourage personal development, foster meaningful connections with others as well as contribute to the community.

Throughout the season, volunteer coaches utilize a structured curriculum to engage teams in fun and interactive lessons. Teams meet twice a week for 75-90 minutes and the program culminates with a celebratory 5K event to provide girls with a tangible sense of accomplishment.

This past season, Girls on the Run Capital Region served 401 girls at 32 sites in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, and Saratoga County. To continue this trend of success, the non-profit organization is currently seeking volunteer coaches to facilitate the program and provide critical leadership to its participants.

Are you looking for a reason to start coaching with Girls on the Run? Here’s what some of our GOTR coaches from Spring 2022 would tell you about why YOU should start coaching:

  • “It is a rewarding experience to work with and influence young girls. It is a great combination of physical and mental health empowerment for both the participants and the coaches. It’s a great way to make an impact.”
  • “Coaching for Girls on the Run is a great opportunity to be a role model for young ladies. You become a mentor to them and someone they can trust. It's more than just exercising, you're building memories and relationships.”
  • “You have the opportunity to change/enhance the lives of young girls which in turn brings you so much pride/joy and ultimately changes your life as well.”
  • “It is a great chance to feel like you are reaching some students in a different way, a way that they can carry with them throughout life.”

Coaches do not need to be athletes or runners to participate, the only requirements are:

  • You must ber at least 18 years of age
